Solar panels need little maintenance, but not none. The panels themselves can last decades. The inverter is the part that usually fails first, because it is the hardest-working piece of electronics in the system, and most home systems will need one replaced at some point.

Output can also drift down with no obvious sign. Wildfire smoke leaves a film across the glass, pollen and orchard dust settle in spring, a neighbour’s tree grows into the afternoon sun, or one panel fails and quietly drags down the rest of its string.

It is worth booking a check if: production is clearly lower than the same month last year; the inverter is showing a fault or has gone dark; one panel reads lower than the others in your app; there are streaks or a film on the glass; you have had heavy snow or hail since the last check; or nobody has been on the roof since the system was switched on. None of these are emergencies, but they all cost more the longer they are left.
